Community Building

Connecting with our community: Capital Daily’s membership kick-off

It’s been just over one month since Capital Daily launched its membership program, and with over 500 people signed up so far, we're thrilled with the results. What's more, a majority signed up for our annual plan, which gives our team the confidence to drive editorial forward and pursue the bigger and deeper stories that matter to Victoria.

When we began developing the membership program, it was important to us to create one that not only engages members, but allows them to meet the people behind the product, connect with others in their community, and gain access to exclusive monthly events. Monthly events aim to foster a strong sense of community building and inclusivity on hot-button issues, and provide a platform for the coming together of ideas and opinions that not only impact members, but also may lead to story gathering for Capital Daily.

Our first event, the Capital Daily Community Council, brought together members of our team, expert panellists in the Greater Victoria community and, of course, our paying members, to broach the topic of housing in Greater Victoria–past, present, and future. As one of Canada’s most expensive cities, housing and rental prices, zoning, densification, green space, and nimbyism are top-of-mind for the local residents and media. The event engaged audience members in a lively discussion and offered a diverse range of perspectives and panellists including Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps, retired city councillor Pamela Madoff, Vancouver Island University Professor Mark Holland, South Oak Bay Community Association President Matt Dell, and Royal Roads Professor Dr. Runa Das.

Looking ahead, our next member event will examine transportation, infrastructure, and the role of the car in Greater Victoria. As the region’s population grows, engaging in public discourse on the best way to accommodate the transportation needs of Greater Victoria will be top-of-mind for our team.

Simply put, hosting events both virtually and in-person allows our team to directly connect with our members outside of our daily newsletter, driving further engagement, while connecting with our membership community on a deeper level.
