📍 Victoria, BC - Running a daily podcast means you have to be nimble. On any given day, host and producer Jackie Lamport and I could be cycling between a half-dozen stories that we think could be strong enough to develop into episodes. It also means being curious about, well, everything. In the span of a week, we might run episodes on everything from skyrocketing housing prices, to the persistence of bike theft in Victoria, to climate action, to a secret library-within-a-library.
I’m new to Capital Daily, but I’m thrilled to be telling stories about Greater Victoria and the Island. It’s been my home for more than three years, and I’d like to think I’ve already touched a few corners of life in the Capital Region—from working in mental health policy, to joining a tech startup, to living between Oak Bay, Vic West, and James Bay. (I still haven’t figured out Victoria’s deal with brunch, but I’ve become a pretty good authority on where to find the best ice cream—Parachute—and where the best, least crowded beaches are—I’ll never tell.) There’s plenty I have to learn about the Island and what makes it tick, but I can’t think of a better opportunity to do that than with the podcast.
Working as part of Capital Daily team has been nothing short of incredible. I feel lucky, honestly. Every day, I get to work shoulder-to-shoulder with an all-star team of reporters who turn out not only gripping longform stories, but pieces that go deeper than anywhere else, and get to the core of the issues that matter most on Vancouver Island. I could gush about each of my coworkers for hours. But instead, let me just say this: you should read their stuff. It’s killer.
What I’m most looking forward to? As COVID allows, I can’t wait to get out and meet people face-to-face across the Island and the surrounding Gulf Islands. There are so many stories out there waiting to be told. I can’t wait to share them with you.
My favourite episodes so far:
Running 800 Kms for Mental Health (Jan 2022)
